Understanding Your Amazon Fulfillment Options

Choosing an Amazon Fulfillment Service Partner

Amazon has become the go-to source for consumers to purchase just about anything, from everyday essentials like laundry detergent to luxury items like high-end clothing and electronics. If your business lists products for sale on Amazon, you have a few different options for order fulfillment. Choosing the right fulfillment service partner for your business is important to ensure that your customers are met with a positive experience no matter where they choose to order your products. Here’s a closer look at what you need to know as an Amazon merchant.

Amazon FBM

Amazon Fulfilled by Merchant, or FBM, means that your business will complete the ecommerce fulfillment process. That means that everything from inventory management to packing and shipping is handled on your end. However, you can streamline Amazon FBM by partnering with a third-party fulfillment service that handles warehousing, pick and pack services, and shipping within their own facilities. This is a great option for businesses who want to maintain more control over how their inventory is stored, packed, and presented to the customer. One drawback, however, is that third-party fulfillment does not meet Amazon Prime requirements, so product listings will not be marked with the Prime badge.

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)

Fulfillment by Amazon ensures that orders will qualify for Amazon Prime listings and will reach consumers as quickly as possible. However, this comes at a much higher cost to businesses, as there are fees for warehousing, long-term storage, and packing/shipping services. Additionally, all orders shipped directly from Amazon warehouses will use Amazon’s packaging and invoices, leaving you with little to no control over how the product arrives with the customer. You may also still need third-party warehousing services to utilize FBA, as you may have inventory stored at a third party facility that is then shipped to an Amazon warehouse for fulfillment.
